MYSTERY OIL HITS LINCOLNSHIRE COAST

11 December 2002 - Oil from an unknown source has washed up along the coast of Lincolnshire.

Earlier in the week the Norfolk and Suffolk coasts had been effected with some 6oo oiled birds being driven onto the shore; this had caused great problems for the R.S.P.C.A..

The oil, in the main, is almost solid and in lumps up to 4ft in length. Many dead birds are  encased within the blocks looking like they have been dipped in hot tar.
15 December 2002 - Six of us began to clear the oil on Sunday morning from The Southern end of Gibraltar Point. The large lumps had to be cut by spade and pushed into thick bin liners, which we subsequently loaded onto a trailer.

Collection of oil continued over the next few days and it is estimated that about 2.5 tons has now been loaded into a hired skip.
