LONG TERM CAMPERS EVICTED FROM SSSI SALTMARSH

The weekend of 2/3rd August 2003 saw a
combined operation of the Lincolnshire Police
and ELDC (East Lindsey District Council) to evict
long term campers from the saltmarsh.

Residents had complained about the campers
setting up their tents against the west dunes,
where they had dug fire pits and used adjacent
bushes for toilets.

Initially they had been moved on by the police but
had set up camp again towards the outer dune
ridge.

In previous years, ELDC had considered they had
no available bylaws and were unable to take action
but have now decided to invoke powers contained
in the 1932 Sandhills Act.
Open fire pit left by campers near the west dunes.                                     Pile of rubbish on outer ridge.
Mattress left against outer dunes.                                                    Abandoned BBQ on tide line.

All tents and rubbish were subsequently cleared by ELDC and the fire pits filled in. Although some tents have
appeared for short periods the position will continue to be monitored for any long term misuse.
